ČRo Plus | In Response to Trump’s Tariffs, the EU Balances Pressure and Patience

Donald Trump has paused the introduction of new tariffs, while maintaining existing ones and raising them on China. The European Union is considering its next steps. The situation was commented on for Czech Radio Plus by Viktor Daněk from the EUROPEUM Institute.

The European Union is considering whether to activate already pre-approved tariffs or to wait and see whether Donald Trump shows a willingness to negotiate a smaller trade agreement that would establish a tariff-free zone for industrial goods. However, the situation remains unclear – Trump frequently changes his positions from day to day, thereby fueling uncertainty.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is visiting the White House today, has previously sought to maintain close ties with the Trump administration. She may use the visit to gain a better understanding of the situation, but in my view, it will not weaken the EU’s effectiveness or unity.

The European Commission may also move toward a coordinated approach with other democratic states, such as Australia, Japan, or South Korea. Although the democratic world is not large in numbers, the urgency to maintain cross-continental alliances is growing – as seen in the ongoing negotiations over a future security arrangement following the war in Ukraine, which also involves partners like Canada and New Zealand.
