ČRo Radiožurnál | Odpolední publicistika: New Owner of Liberty Ostrava Steelworks. European Union Budget. Measures Against Fish Die-Offs

How is the draft of the next EU budget set up, including from the perspective of Czechia? The situation was commented on for ČRo Radiožurnál by Martin Vokálek, Executive Director and Head of the Brussels Office of the EUROPEUM Institute.
16. July 2025

The very timing of the publication of the draft for the new Multiannual Financial Framework of the EU signals the need to find a balance between new geopolitical ambitions and the traditional expectations of member states — as well as the existing policies funded by the European budget. We are living through a historic moment for Europe as a whole. We must respond to the war in Ukraine, strengthen our defence capabilities, and invest in innovation and climate measures. Therefore, it will be essential to strike a balance that allows us to meet these new priorities without significantly cutting back on the existing ones. At the same time, this will likely require an increase in the overall budget.
